Punakaiki

A Weka - again. They are just so funny - very curious and inquisitive, a bit like the Kea, and with a habitus that is not entirely unlike the one of the Kiwi - only that they still have a "normal" beak (with nostrils at the base as opposed to at the tip of the beak) and that they are active during daytime. And they have no "whiskers" of course; not needed during the day. And they have some wing remnants left that they use when they flee - looks funny; they can't actually fly any more.

In Punakaiki all of a sudden you are surrounded by palmtrees! (not so  in any other place around the coast we visited)

The cat is one of the big problems of Newzealand (beneath the farmers, the logging industry, the possum, the rats, the... a.s.o.) - still, this one was so cute, couldn't resist taking pics of her.

Te Nikau Retreat in Punakaiki - a magical place, surrounded by dense forest and at the same time very close to the beach
