Volcano National Park

H: the caldera of Kilauea - incredibly big and deep! Within this caldera that encompasses almost the whole panorama, there is another caldera, and within that one another one - where the steam is coming out. That latest one is filled with fluid lava (not to be seen at daytime)

H: Again, the caldera within the big Kilauea caldera and within that another opening to the big magma bubble under our feet here, where the white smoke is coming from

H: Kilauea Iki - another, smaller caldera adjoining the Kilaue caldera; a frozen Lavasea upon wich you can hike these days

H: down at the lavasea

H: this lavasea is spooky, lets get away ;)

H: Kilauea Iki again - plates of frozen lava

H: ....aaaaand here comes the proof there IS actually lava in the caldera within a caldera within a caldera

H: the magma lights the steam from beneath

H: irrelevant guest

H: very relevant bird: the APAPANE!!! Why the uppercase letters? Because its the first Hawaiian native bird we saw. Volcanoe NP lies high enough for these birds to be a sanctuary where they can live, unmolested by Mynas, moscitos carrying bird deseases and other ugly stuff. If you are up in these woods, the bird sounds are just so much different to the lowlands and so much more beautiful, even sounding musical at times. Again: a lost paradise, like in Newzealand, only persisting in small parts of the island.

H: Our emergency quarters - a very nice and expensive B&B
